Town and Courtyard Gardens
For ten years my speciality was designing and working out the best way that small spaces can be perfectly utilised. Typically I would have about 3 minutes to size-up the aspect of the garden, understand the style desired by the client, the situation, practicality of the garden and its surroundings - all from a standing start and that still applies to whatever the size and scale of the garden.
Luckily that's what I do best and my designs for small gardens have been incredibly varied, as the pictures on this page hint at. These skills are available to you through GardenEye. We make the most of every part of the garden whilst at the same time creating a feeling of space.
From a process point of view, small gardens often need only a minimal plan, if a plan is required at all. This means that everything can happen quickly, and at a reduced cost.
Points to remember when planning a small garden:
This is always great for smaller gardens – light up feature plants and patios. Take a note of the sunny spots or sun traps in the garden and, if you have the aspect, where the evening sun sets. This is vital for planning where to place your outside table and sitting areas for summer evening barbecues. Very important if you have lots of pots. A week away in midsummer can be a disaster for some plants, therefore we will need to consider irrigation methods to keep the garden healthy. Please have some idea of what you are prepared to spend. Without wishing to state the obvious, this is critical to our plans.
Children
They won't be at home forever, so whilst young children require an area in which to play right now, keep an eye on future development when they grow up.Dogs
Dog antics mean you will struggle to have a perfect lawn.
Planting
Plants grow relatively quickly, so be prepared to cut them back to size when the time comes.
The Frame
Your fences, walls and bed outlines are the key to the success of the small garden design.
